Ebola in Uganda: What Tourists Need to Know

We understand that hearing about an Ebola outbreak in Uganda might raise concerns. But rest assured there is no risk to tourists. Uganda remains a safe and welcoming destination, with strong health measures in place to protect both visitors and locals.
How is Ebola transmitted?
Ebola spreads only through direct physical contact with the body fluids of an infected person. This usually happens in healthcare settings or within families caring for infected individuals. As a tourist, you won’t be in situations where such contact could occur, making the risk to you virtually nonexistent.
Who is at risk of Ebola in Uganda?
In the past, healthcare workers and those preparing the bodies of victims for burial were most at risk. Fortunately, thanks to medical advances, frontline health workers are now vaccinated, significantly reducing their chances of infection.
Can Uganda contain the Ebola outbreak?
Absolutely! Uganda has a strong track record of successfully managing and containing disease outbreaks. The country effectively controlled previous Ebola outbreaks, including the 2014 case, without affecting tourists. In fact, Uganda’s expertise in fighting Ebola is globally recognized—our medical teams have even been called upon to assist other African nations in tackling outbreaks. Uganda also managed COVID-19 remarkably well, with a low fatality rate due to swift and effective health measures.
Are tourism areas affected?
No. The current Ebola case was reported in Mubende District, an area with no tourist activities. While some safari vehicles may pass through the district, there is no reason for concern or any changes to your travel plans.
Is primate tracking safe?
Yes, primate tracking remains completely safe. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) enforces strict distance regulations to prevent close contact between humans and gorillas. During the COVID-19 pandemic, masks were also introduced as an extra precaution—these measures primarily protect the primates but also contribute to visitor safety.
Additionally, the health of gorilla groups is closely monitored. In the unlikely event of any concerns, UWA will act swiftly, including suspending visits to affected groups if necessary.
Your Safety is Our Priority
At Uganda’s national parks and tourist sites, visitor safety is our top priority. You can confidently enjoy your safari, gorilla trekking, and other incredible experiences without worry. Uganda is ready to welcome you for a safe, unforgettable adventure!
