The magnificent Murchison Falls National Park
The Murchison Falls National park is one of Uganda’s best wonders which attract many travelers to visit while in Uganda. Also referred to as the Kabarega Falls, this waterfall is found along the course of the great Nile as it journey through Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. The sight of watching the Great River Nile on the peak of the Murchison Falls as the waters force their way through a small slit within the rocks, 23 feet wide and toppling over 141 feet cliff with a thunderous roar that forms a beautiful rainbow.
The Murchison falls splits the stunning Victoria Nile, that flows across Uganda’s northern region from the vast Lake Victoria to the deep Lake Kyoga and to the northern tip of Lake Albert within the western East African Rift Valley. At the peak of the Murchison falls, Lake Victoria sends about 300 cubic meters of water per second.
Located within the Murchison Falls National park, these eye- catching waterfalls are the reason this enormous park receives the most visitors compared to the other parks and is recognized as one of the best National parks in Uganda and as well it is well visited. The park is endowed with several attractions including over 76 mammal species including the four members of the big five, the lion, the leopards, the elephants, and the Buffaloes. Other species include bushbucks, Uganda kob, waterbucks and warthogs, giraffes, Jackson’s hartebeest, hyenas and several primates including baboons and several monkey species. Hippos and crocodiles are the permanent residents along the shores of the River Nile.
Murchison falls National Park is also home to over 450 recorded birds species including the rare shoebill stork including 23 Albertine rift endemics given its location in the western arm of the east African rift valley making it a perfect place or birding enthusiasts.
The highlight of your tour in Murchison falls National Park is visiting the “Murchison Falls” a point along the Nile, within the park where River Nile forces its way through a narrow gorge 8 meters wide. The launch trip up stream is very interesting and offers magnificent views of the falls and several wildlife species and you can also opt for the downstream ride to the delta.
