With the addition of two new borne gorilla to the Mubare Group of Bwind National Park, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) on 7th November 2019 announced the birth of another baby gorilla in the Mubare family shouting the population from the current 5 to 9 members. It is said that the mother (known as Karungi) and the baby are in good health. However the sex/gender of the baby is not yet established.

About the Mubare Gorilla Group

The Mubare family Group was the first habituated gorilla group in Uganda in the year 1993.

The Mubare Gorilla family is found in the Buhoma sector in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The group was named after the gorgeous Mubare hills where it was first seen and consists of 18 gorilla members that later reduced to 5 members due to movement in different groups and loss lives due to constant fights.

Below are the members of the Mubare group when they were still 5 in number;

• Kanyonyi in the black back
• Kashundwe the adult female
• Muyambi the sub-adult female
• Malaika the sub-adult female
• Kashundwe the infant baby

Besides Mubare gorilla family, Buhoma sector also consists of 3 other gorilla groups which include;

• Rushegura gorilla family
• Katwe gorilla family
• Habinyanja gorilla family

If one is to go for gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda, Buhoma region in Bwindi impenetrable national park is the most preferred by the tourists because it is well accessed from Kampala capital city. Buhoma is not only the ideal place for gorilla trekking but It also offers other activities such as birding, nature walks and cultural activities among others.

How to get to Buhoma sector
The Buhoma sector is easily accessible from Kabale town through Kihihi and for short time travelers they can fly from kajjansi to Kihihi airstrip after which they drive shortly to the Buhoma sector. For those connecting from Rwanda, the Katuna border is the appropriate entry.

The new baby has helped to increased on the population of mountain gorillas in Uganda giving hope for sustainability of the Uganda gorilla population and tourism.
