Discovering Rwanda’s Premier National Parks
Rwanda’s national parks are protected ecosystems and wildlife reserves located in East-Central Africa. As of 2020, Rwanda’s national park system comprises Volcanoes National Park, Akagera National Park, and Nyungwe Forest National Park. These parks are managed by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) with support from government ministries, ensuring the conservation of natural habitats and wildlife while promoting sustainable tourism.
Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda
Situated in the northwest, Volcanoes National Park is part of the Virunga volcanic chain, which stretches into Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This park is not only the oldest in Africa but also one of the most heavily patrolled in the world. It serves as a critical sanctuary for mountain gorillas, the population of which has been steadily increasing in recent years. Visitors to see the gorillas are strictly regulated, and permits must be secured in advance through the RDB. The park also provides a habitat for the golden monkey, a rare and charismatic primate.
Nyungwe National Park
Located in the highlands along the southern border with Burundi, Nyungwe National Park is a tropical rainforest teeming with biodiversity. It is home to chimpanzees and numerous other primate species, making it an ideal destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
Akagera National Park
On Rwanda’s eastern border with Tanzania, Akagera National Park protects a classic African savanna ecosystem. Its diverse wildlife includes giraffes, elephants, buffalo, zebras, gazelles, and baboons. Although lions were eradicated during the Rwandan genocide, they were reintroduced in 2015, and the population has since grown to nearly 40 individuals.
