Matatu/Taxis
It is the best way to get around Kampala city and the neighboring towns and the most efficient and cost-effective method of transportation in urban areas though conductors sometimes try to overcharge tourists and crowded but on the other hand they are cheap, frequent, and make lots of stops.
These Mini Buses run along fixed routes, picking up and dropping off people on allocated stages along the route. If you’re not sure where to catch a taxi going to your destination, asking a nearby driver or conductor will point you in the right direction.
Pioneer Bus / City Buses
These buses can be identified by their large size and orange and black colors. These buses operate similarly to the matatu bus system except that they are more. The service is very professional and friendly this can be noted by the clean uniforms with ties worn by the conductors and drivers. There are set bus stops all over town, which eliminates the sudden stopping and starting. And perhaps the best part of all is that these buses have a standard fare.
Bus / Coaches
These buses are owned by several companies which offer direct lines between Kampala and neighboring countries and have bus stations in the city.
Uganda has two decent bus systems. There are the Mini Buses (Matatu Taxis) or commuter vans which run fixed routes. Then there are the real buses or Cross Country Buses which run less frequently, usually leaving Kampala early in the morning for up country or across to neighboring countries. Domestic bus travel is reasonable and cheap between major centers, and is a good choice for backpackers with time, but may not run reliably on schedule.
Note that both buses and “taxis” do not run on fixed schedules; rather, they leave their terminus stop when they are completely full for their destined routes.
