Overview

Lake Mburo national park hosts a thousands of animal species, a heaven for nature tour, the smallest of Uganda’s savannah national parks and is located in kiruhura district in the western Uganda, the park is situated about 30 kilometers by road, east of Mbarara after Masaka, Lake Mburo National game Park harbors several wildlife species not observed else where in Uganda.

Lake Mburo is the only park in Uganda to support a population of impala (from which Kampala city derives its name), and only one of the three protected areas countrywide where Burchell’s zebra occurs, the other two being the far less accessible Kidepo and Pian-Upe.

Other antelopes easily seen are topi, bush buck, common duiker, oribi, Defassa water buck and Bofor reed buck, while the lake and lush fringing vegetation support healthy populations of buffalo, warthog and hippopotamus. Large herds of the majestic eland keep roaming the park. The sitatunga confines itself to the swampy areas of the park. Only two diurnal primates occur in Lake Mburo: the vervet monkey and olive baboon. Nocturnal calls of the spotted hyena can be heard through the night.

Leopard, side-striped jackal, and several smaller predators, including the white-tailed mongoose and three otter species, thrive in the park’s diverse habitats. Lake Mburo National Park is also home to the iconic Ankole cattle, tended by the traditional Bahima pastoralists, whose magnificent herds graze harmoniously alongside the wildlife. The park’s ecosystem is shaped by distinct dry and wet seasons, which influence animal movements. While it lacks major predators like lions and elephants, the recent introduction of Rothschild giraffes has added to the park’s appeal, enhancing the safari experience.

Itinerary

Gorilla Safaris Uganda Travel Guide will pick you up at 6:00 AM from your hotel or residence in Kampala/Entebbe to begin your  1 day Lake Mburo National Park safari tour. Complimentary drinking water is provided for the approximately 3 hrs drive to the park.

Upon arrival, you’ll check into the park and embark on a guided game drive with a Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger. As you explore the park, you’ll have the opportunity to spot zebras, giraffes, antelopes, and a variety of bird species noted is the crested crane. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of buffaloes, warthogs, and even leopards. Lake Mburo is one of the few places in Uganda where you can see zebras in their natural habitat, making for a truly unforgettable safari experience.

Lunch is included in the tour cost and will be enjoyed by the lake (there are 5 lakes within the Park) Afterward, embark on a relaxing boat ride along the shore, where you’ll have the chance to spot crocodiles, numerous hippos with a variety of birds to see. This is the highlight of your 1 day lake mburo nature safari tour.

Afterwards, we bid farewell to the park’s friendly staff as we depart for Kampala. We drive through a magnificent hilly country and lush cultivation on an approximately 4hrs journey. En route we will stop at the Equator for photographs and ‘polar-water experiment’, then a local community popular for making local drums (Mpabire Village), gardens, crafts shops and fruit markets.

We will be in Kampala in the evening before for your flight back home.
